Hello, Poetry Friend
Thanksgiving has always been special to me because it’s my end-of-year celebration. I celebrate the new year on the first Sunday of Advent, which usually falls on the Sunday following Turkey Day. So that means those waning days of November are spent giving thanks for the past twelve months.
When the kids were young, we wrote out what we were thankful on strips of paper throughout November and put them in a pitcher painted with pumpkins. We’d read them together on Thanksgiving Eve, when I made them watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
What is one thing you are thankful for? Write it as a haiku—three lines, 5 syllables / 7 syllables / 5 syllables. Imagine you are writing it onto a slip of paper and placing it a pumpkin pitcher.
Here’s my November poetic offering.
For fifty-four straight days in the chapel – dark but for waning candles
Share your thanksgiving haiku in the comments.
