Psalm 47

"Terrible" x10

Hello, Poetry Friend

Each week as I prepare to cantor the Psalm, I read it in multiple translations. Increasingly, ye ol’ King James is becoming my favorite because it uses words that surprise me.

In this Psalm, the word is “terrible.” Thank you, Merriam-Webster, for putting some flesh on that terrible bone.

v 1   O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.


v 2   For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is formidable; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is shocking; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is troubling; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is trying; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is unnerving; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is intimidating; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is redoubtable; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is eerie; he is a great King over all the earth.
For the LORD most high is awful; he is a great King over all the earth.
